22nd ETCO Congress: "Transforming Lives. A Time of Change for Organ Donation and Transplantation."

From the welcome message on the ETCO website:

"ETCO are delighted to announce the 22nd ETCO Congress in Cardiff. We anticipate this will be the largest ever European Organ Donation Congress and will be held for the first time in the UK. […]Transplant coordination is increasingly recognized as a key factor in improving organ donation rates. The organ shortage is the greatest impediment to organ transplantation. The European Commission’s Action Plan on Organ Donation and Transplantation calls for training and accreditation and appointment of TCs in all transplantation hospitals. The UK government is implementing ambitious reforms which include doubling the number of transplant coordinators.

ETCO fulfils a vital role in resolving this complexity, providing training, guidelines, an interactive forum for professionals, and accreditation of professional excellence and quality of procedures. ETCO is the voice of the transplant coordinator and is dedicated to winning recognition of the importance of the role of coordinators and helping governments and the European Parliament in drawing up laws and regulations. Our congress is an opportunity for young professional to develop their skills, researchers to divulge their discoveries and experts to share their knowledge.[…]"
ETCO is organizing 4 workshops on 23 September 2010:

  • Preservation Workshop: Practical demonstrations in a wet lab with Organ Recovery Systems, Transmedics, X-VIVO
  • Keynote and Plenary Symposia
  • Brain Death Diagnosis and Donor Treatment
  • Communication and Research Skills for Transplant Coordinators
  • Quality Assurance Programme in the Deceased Donation Process

.
The Certification of European Transplant Coordination (CETC) examinations will be held during the congress, organized by the Board of Transplant Coordination, Division of Transplantation, Section of Surgery of the UEMS, in close collaboration with ETCO.
