Since 2004 the EURL-CEFAO is accredited as testing laboratory in accordance with the International Standard ISO/IEC 17025. The accreditation was assessed by the Swedish Board of Accreditation, Swedac, until 30 June 2012. During that time, in order to improve the qualification of its work, the Laboratory applied and obtained the flexible scope for 17025 and the accreditation as PT Provider in accordance with International Guide ISO Guide 43-1 and subsequently (2011) with ISO/IEC 17043:2010.

The EURL supports NRLs by organizing interlaboratory comparisons for the determination of chemical elements in food of animal origin (defined in CR 854/2004) pursuing selected objectives. In fact, since 2006 the EURL-CEFAO has been working to improve the analytical performance of NRLs proposing exercises dealing with matrices fortified at concentration of interest. Therefore chemical elements and matrices used are both those for which a ML is fixed in CR (EC) 1881/2006 and those generally analyzed in National Residues Control Plans of EU MS....

The European Union Reference Laboratory for Chemical Elements in Food of Animal Origin (EURL-CEFAO) is hosted by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Department of Food Safety and Veterinary Public Health. The EURL-CEFAO is responsible for the residues listed in the Annex I, Group B3(c) in the Council Directive 96/23/EC of 29 April 1996, that is Chemical Elements in Food of Animal Origin.
