Coordinating Beneficiary’s profile:
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) is the leading technical and scientific public body of the Italian National Health Service. Its activities include research, control, training and consultation in the interest of public health protection, including scientific advice to Ministry of Health and European Commission. The ISS is the major Italian institution devoted to research in public health. The Institutte conducts scientific research in a wide variety of fields, from cutting-edge molecular and genetic research to population-based studies of risk factors for disease and disability. Research priorities are based on those set forth in the National Health Plan.
Main activities of the ISS include chemical and toxicological risk assessment, food safety, environmental and human health. ISS is a scientific consultant at both national and EU level on such topics as REACH, testing and assessment of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), environment and health as well as new guidelines on toxicological testing; thus, ISS acts as an interface between research and risk assessment, providing scientific consultancy services at national and international levels (e.g. EU/EC, IARC, NATO, OECD, UNEP, WHO) and contributes to national and EU regulatory provisions. ISS is headquarters of National Focal Point of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), keystone of EU risk assessment regarding food and feed safety.

The IRCCS - Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri is a private non-profit organization under D.P.R. (Decree of the Italian President of the Republic) no. 361 dated 5th April 1961 and is an organization entitled to perform research projects funded by the Italian Government under D.P.R. no. 382 dated 11th July 1980.
The scientific responsible of the beneficiary in this proposal is Dr. Emilio Benfenati, Head of the Laboratory for Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. He is coordinating, and has coordinated in the past, 15 EC projects (including the LIFE projects ANTARES and CALEIDOS), and is participating, and has participated, to 16 other EC projects, many of them are on toxicity and environmental modelling. He has coordinated other international projects on (Q)SARs with USA and European partners.
Within one of these project, CAESAR, a new software for regulatory purposes for REACH has been developed. The research activities of Emilio Benfenati includes: Computational chemistry; (Q)SAR; Toxicity prediction; Environmental toxicology; Environmental management; Environmental chemistry; Analysis of organic compounds by mass spectrometry; Metabolism studies and Risk assessment.
He has organised and co-organised some conferences/workshops/symposia on (Q)SAR and modeling, and environmental sciences, including the last edition of the SETAC conference in Milan, May 2011, with more than 2100 participants. He is author or co-author of more than 200 papers in international journals and books.

Expertise
Design and synthesis of biologically active compounds by means of solution and solid phase techniques applied to both traditional and microwave assisted organic chemistry. Our interest has been also focused on the application of microwave-assisted combinatorial chemistry to the development of library of scaffolds to be inserted in active heterocyclic and peptidomimetic derivatives.
Working experience
Our research group has been mainly involved in medicinal chemistry field. The research of our group is essentially related to design and synthesis of novel heterocyclic, peptidic and peptidomimetic derivatives. In recent years our interest has been focused to the application of microwave assisted organic chemistry to the synthesis of active compounds. Previously mentioned fields of interest is documented by about 150 publications in international journals and communications to national and international symposiums. Research infrastructure
