Research

Countries should "strengthen existing, or establish new centers and institutions engaged in genomic research with a view of strengthening national capacity and accelerating application of the advances in genomics relevant to countries". A more complete understanding of the architecture and variation of the human genome together with the richness of the cultural, social, non-genetic environment will allow to understand not only the genetic history of the Mediterranean populations but mostly the roots of many psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Our first pilot project involves mainly ASD (autism spectrum disorders) and schizophrenia. Postgenomics of ASD identifies in genome environment interaction a regulatory pathway of human endogenous retroviruses. To rule out the schizophrenia project we perform brain imaging and deep sequencing analysis.
