About MedGENE

The MEDiterranean Genome - Environment NEtwork (MedGENE) for (research on) psychiatric disorders. The Mediterranean is a highly complex area, with a long history of civilization and unique features of the populations living in the countries around the sea.
Alternating migrations and settlements in the last 50,000 years, Mediterranean populations developed unique characteristics compared to other world populations.
A more complete understanding of the architecture and variation of the human genome together with the richness of the cultural, social, non-genetic environment will allow to understand not only the genetic history of the Mediterranean populations but mostly the roots of many psychiatric and behavioral disorders. The MEDiterranean Genome - Environment NEtwork (MedGENE) for (research on) psychiatric disorders is a network devoted to the research in the interaction between genome plasticity/activity and the impact of the environment on the individual psyche.

The main goals of MedGENE are:

1) to create and foster a network of scientists, clinicians and researchers interested in jointly pursuit investigations on the genetic and environmental/social determinants of psychiatric diseases across the Mediterranean Countries;
2) to map ethical, social and legal issues in each Mediterranean country, addressing recommendations and ensuring best practices for clinical research with biological materials and biobanks in vulnerable population;
3) to provide training and improving the career development of translational scientists;
4) to contribute to the mental health of Mediterranean populations;
5) to set up the initial priorities in specific research objectives.
