External quality assessment of the ISS

The External Quality Assessment (EQA) of genetic testing coordinated by the ISS is an activity that is part of two Research Projects: “The National Project for the Standardisation and Quality Assurance of Genetic Testing” (2000/2002) and “Genetic Testing: from research to clinical applications” (2003/2005).

Both Projects are funded by the Ministry of Health and are coordinated by the ISS-Scientific Director: Dr. Domenica Taruscio.

The EQA, which began at an operative level in 2001, covers cytogenetic testing as well as molecular genetic testing for Cystic Fibrosis, Beta Thalessemia, Fragile X Syndrome and Adenomatous Polyposis of the Colon.

Results

Both for molecular genetics and for cytogenetics, results were evaluated by groups of experts, composed of members of the Steering Committee and of experts within the sector, who examined in complete anonymity all the data sent to the ISS.

The participating laboratories subsequently received a letter with the opinion and specific comments toward improvement of the analyses.

To consult the results of the genotyping of the samples that were sent for molecular genetics in the IV trial of the EQA (2004-2005) see the section “Related Documents”.
