Back Press Release No 03/2022 COVID-19: ISS flash survey. On January 3 Omicron-positive samples are 81%

Rome, 14 January 2022

In Italy on 03 January Omicron was the predominant variant of the virus, with an estimated prevalence of 81% and a regional variability between 33% and 100%. The Delta variant, instead, accounted for 19% of the examined samples. These are the final results of the flash survey carried out by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health) and the Ministry of Health together with the regional laboratories and the Bruno Kessler Foundation.

For the investigation, the laboratories of the Regions and Autonomous Provinces were asked to select subsamples of positive cases and to sequence the genome of the virus. The sample requested was chosen by the Regions / PPAA at random from among the positive samples, ensuring geographical coverage and, if possible, representation of different age groups. In total, all the Regions / Autonomous Provinces, a total of 120 regional laboratories and the Military Health Laboratory participated in the survey. 2632 samples were sequenced.
