Gender identity

Transgender population is still marginalized with respect to health policies, with obstacles in the use of both general and specialist health services.

To acquire further information on the state of health of this population and to carry out specific training for health care providers, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS, the National Institute of Health in Italy) is promoting dedicated research projects such as studies on health status (lifestyles, access to health services, prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncological diseases), CME courses (Continuing Medical Education) for health care providers, conferences, communication and information activities including the creation of the first institutional web site on legal and health information dedicated to the transgender population (www.infotrans.it).
