Prevention and therapies

Some neurological diseases are preventable by acting on risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and low education level.

The pharmacological treatments available for neurodegenerative diseases are often symptomatic, e.g. directed towards controlling symptoms and clinical signs, while for neurovascular diseases and multiple sclerosis there are drugs that can modify the natural history of the disease. Neurological diseases can also benefit from rehabilitation, psychosocial and educational treatments.

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS, the National Institute of Health in Italy) provides current knowledge on prevention and control of neurological diseases to health and social care professionals.
