Surveillance began in Italy in January 1993 as part of a European project with the aim to identify any changes in the incidence and clinical or neuropathological manifestations of CJD in Europe following the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in the UK. United. Suspected cases are classified according to international criteria adopted by the international CJD surveillance network amended in 2017 and reported in the annex (Diagnostic criteria).

In this section we have summarized the main data of the surveillance. The tables show the number of cases with suspicion of CJD reported to the Registry of CJD and related syndromes in Rome and the number of deaths from certain or probable CJD in Italy since 1 January 1993 and the number of deaths from CJD and death rates for region.
