People in self-isolation cannot have visitors in their home and, if possible, must keep at a safe distance from other family members in a well-ventilated single room. Should this not be possible, family members must keep at a one-metre distance from the infected person. These are some of the recommendations drawn up by the ISS in case of a confirmed infection.
Anyone providing assistance to the infected person must wear a surgical mask, closely fitting to their face, when in the same room with the patient. Likewise, anyone changing the bed sheets must wear a face mask.
When in self-isolation, potentially hazardous materials should not be subjected to selective waste collection and must instead be disposed of in the undifferentiated garbage bin, while the contaminated household linen must be placed in a dedicated bag by using gloves.
The patient’s clothes, bed linen, towels, etc. must be machine-washed with normal detergent at 60-90°C. The surface of bedside tables and other furniture in the patient’s bedroom, toilet facilities and bathroom surfaces must be cleaned and sanitized daily with a normal household disinfectant or with chlorine-based products (bleach) with 0.5% active chlorine, or with 70% solution of alcohol while wearing protective gloves and clothing.
