European research infrastructures (ERIC) and National nodes
The ISS represents Italy in BBMRI, EATRIS and ECRIN European consortia. In addition, the national nodes of the two European RIs EATRIS and ECRIN as well as the technical-scientific secretariat of BBMRI are hosted at ISS, by the Research coordination and support service (https://www.iss.it/web/iss-en/research-coordination-and-support).
Since 2008, on behalf of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the ISS has contributed to the design and creation of the three major European Research Infrastructures (RIs) for Health: BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure), EATRIS (European Advanced Translational Research Infrastructure) and ECRIN (European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network).
These Ris have reached the status of “ERIC” (European Research Infrastructure Consortium), a legal framework introduced by the European Commission, in order to promote research advances and technological development programs in specific fields, which were not feasible and sustainable by the individual Member State. Currently, the ERIC RIs already in action or under construction are about 25, of which 6 belong to the biomedical area, 8 the environmental area, 6 to the human and social sciences and 3 to advanced materials, physics and engineering (https://www.esfri.eu/).
Furthermore, the ISS is partner of the European RI ELIXIR (European Life-science Infrastructure for Biological Information), which deals with infrastructures for high-intensity data analysis and its primary aim is to support research in the field of "life science" (www.elixir-europe.org), and partner of METROFOOD, a Research Infrastructure created to harmonize scientific research in the field of food quality and safety and to promote metrology for food and nutrition (https://www.metrofood.eu/).
