The rapid increase in Italy of bloodstream infections due to Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales (CPE) led in 2013 the Italian Ministry of Health to start a national surveillance for CPE. The surveillance protocol was reviewed on 6 December 2019: “Review of the instruction for the surveillance and control of infections due to CRE”. From January 2020 Regional Health Authorities can report cases by accessing to the online case reporting system. Reporting and data analysis was conducted by the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the National Institute of Health in Italy).
