Tobacco and e-cigarettes

Tobacco consumption is one of the major risk factors in the development of cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Tobacco, a chronic relapsed disease, is one of the biggest public health problems in the world. Emerging phenomenon is the intake of nicotine through next-generation tobacco products and e-cigarettes, particularly important in the youth population for the characteristics of high additivity of nicotine.

To prevent and counter initiation and encourage dis-habituation, the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) carries out studies and research based on scientific evidence, produces and disseminates guidelines and recommendations, promotes surveillance systems, and it offers training for social and health workers, facilitates the meeting of the demand of citizens and the offer of services in the territory, and through counseling interventions proposed by the Help line against Smoking – 800 554088.

The ISS provides scientific technical support for the characteristics of next-generation tobacco products, control over e-cigarettes for hazardous substances and contaminated liquids.
