Extra pathways

Extra Pathways (formerly AlternanzaPiù, Dual TrainingPlus) is a way of participating in the PCTO project in the ISS, which enables the students of the partner schools of the ISS to continue the experience acquired in the training pathways or to join new initiatives.

From 2016 to 2019, more than 240 students from 26 schools were involved in 16 Extra Projects (for a total of roughly 2,500 hours), giving them the opportunity to present the results of the PCTO experience in scientific conferences and events hosted at the ISS on themes of great importance for the world of adolescents (Alcohol Prevention Day, World  No Tobacco Day, the National Seminar on the Assessment of the Use and Safety of Prescription Drugs in Italy, and the World Health Day, with the exceptional opening of the ISS Museum to the public) and to support the activity of ISS researchers at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 edition of European Researchers’ Night, as well as at the educational events in the gardens of the ISS, such as the scientific party held in June 2018 titled “AISM and ISS: together for multiple sclerosis”, and the Open Day: “The ISS and Alzheimer’s Disease: prevention in addition to diagnosis” in June 2019.

In 2019, the ISS portal organised the project titled: Dalla post-verità alla verità dei post, alla verità dei fatti. Contro fake news e bufale per porre al centro l'informazione scientifica, which involved 10 students of the Aristofane, Morgagni and Pasteur Lyceums in an effort to find and evaluate fake news/hoaxes on health issues found online, to develop a questionnaire to administer to their peers at school and to develop original products promoting communication among peers. The students presented the results of the project at the closing day of the second cycle of the Dual Education and Work-based Training (ASL) at the ISS held on 15 March 2019.

Again in 2019, the project titled Stimulating Smoking. How we receive stimuli to smoke on a daily basis, was promoted, the results of which were presented by two of the students of the Volterra Lyceum involved at the Conference hosted at the ISS on 31 May 2019 to celebrate the World No Tobacco Day.

In 2018, a delegation of students from the Tasso Lyceum was invited by the MIUR to the 28th edition of the JOB&ORIENTA Fair in Verona from 29 November to 1 December to present the ASL activities carried out at the ISS in the academic year 2017-2018.

In 2017, several students received the scientific support of ISS researchers in order to participate in the competition called by the Italian Federation of Life Sciences titled: “Present your Teamwork”, which included screening two videos on the subject of combating tumours (“Will we succeed to win the battle against cancer?”) and doping (“Doping as a Health Hazard”), developed by and featuring the same group of students, who won second and third place in the competition.
