A large number of chemical products are placed on the EU market and used both by the general public in their everyday lives as well as by professionals in their working environments, this is the case of detergents. Chemical products are in general considered to be safe when their use instructions are followed, however, unintentional exposure to hazardous substances can occur, for example due to inappropriate use or accidents. Good environmental practice for household detergents should be routinely applied. Detergents intended for washing and cleaning processes are subjected to Regulation (EC) No 648/2004. Besides this backbone, manufacturers of cleaning products are facing new challenges due to globalization, there is a market need to improve detergents and promote their safe use. This report is the results of a collaboration between the Centro Nazionale Sostanze Chimiche, Prodotti Cosmetici e Protezione del Consumatore of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Ministry of Health in the framework of a common project on detergents based on control measures for accidental detergents poisoning, including actions that can be taken to reduce a potential exposure to hazardous substances.
