The report analyses the data prescription of drugs within the Umbria region in 2018. The total pharmaceutical expenditure amounted to 427 million Euro, of which 86.5% covered by the National Health Service (NHS) and the remaining proportion is out-of-pocket. The expenditure for outpatients prescription was stable in comparison with 2017 (similarly to the Italian trend), whereas an 14.5% increase was observed for the in-hospital expenditure. The level of use, in terms of defined daily doses (DDDs) per 1000 inhabitants die, was higher in Umbria than in the average Italian population (1098 vs 979). The prevalence of use in the population is 71%, with a strong gradient for age, around 71% of the doses, and 64% of the expenditure, are prescribed to the population older than 65 years. The prescription of generic drugs reached 81% of the DDDs in 2018.
