2020, ii, 114 p. Rapporti ISTISAN 20/2 (in Italian)

The report analyses the prescription of drugs within the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in 2018. The total pharmaceutical expenditure amounted to 204 million euros, of which 76% covered by the National Health Service (NHS), whereas the remaining proportion is out-of-pocket. The expenditure for outpatients’ prescription slightly decreased (-1.6%) in comparison with 2017 (similarly to the Italian trend), whereas the in-hospital expenditure increased by 8.7%. Cardiovascular drugs were the most prescribed therapeutic category; drugs for dementia, for multiple sclerosis, antidepressants and immunosuppressants are the categories with higher levels of use in the Province in comparison with the national level. Around 55% of the expenditure, and 67% of the doses are prescribed to the population older than 65 years. More than 80% of the doses prescribed in 2018 are relevant to off-patent drugs.
