Volume 33, no. 11, November 2020. HIV/AIDS infection in Italy up to December 31, 2019

Abstract:

HIV/AIDS infection in Italy up to December 31, 2019
Since 2012 data on new HIV diagnoses have a national coverage. In 2019, 2,531 new HIV diagnoses were reported, equalling an incidence of 4.2 per 100,000 residents. In 2019, HIV incidence in Italy was slightly lower compared to that reported in the European Union (4.7 new diagnoses per 100,000). Since 2012, the number of new HIV diagnoses has decreased, with no relevant differences by transmission mode. In 2019, heterosexual transmission accounted for 42% (25% in males, 17% in females) of reported cases, sex between men accounted for 42%, and injecting drug users accounted for 6%. Data on AIDS cases have been collected since 1982. In 2019, 571 AIDS cases were reported, equalling an incidence of 0.9 per 100,000 residents; 70% of these individuals were unaware of being HIV-infected.
