Volume 33, no. 2, February 2020. Vulnerable subjects in clinical trials. Wellness promotion: communication and training. Island of Sustainability 2019

Abstracts:

Vulnerable subjects in clinical trials and informed consent
The protection of vulnerable subjects in research, including minors and incapacitated adults, is an ethical imperative affirmed in the most renowned ethical declarations and in national and European regulations dedicated to the conduct of clinical trials. The inclusion of a vulnerable subject in a clinical trial is possible only when the trial results cannot be obtained by other research methods and by including persons that are able to provide informed consent, the trial is directly associated with a condition that is affecting the subject and there are scientific reasons to believe that participation could bring to the subject or to the population that s/he represents a direct benefit which is greater than the risk. For the subjects unable to express the informed consent, the same can be expressed by a legal representative, with the assent at least of the non-opposition of the person concerned, also taking into account his/her previously expressed wishes.

Wellness promotion: communication and training
Brief descriptions of workshops carried out in 2019 by the Italian National Institute of Health (Department of Neuroscience and Scientific Communication Service) are here reported. They refer to: promotion of wellness and life skills, marketing and social communication, prevention of gender-based violence, ALS, social neuroscience, care of doctors, communication of diagnosis, and communication in palliative care. Due to the huge interest in these topics, some training proposals will be also repeated in the year 2020.
