Pepper Mild Mottle Virus in Italian waters: a candidate that could work as a viral indicator of faecal contamination
Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV) is a plant pathogen belonging to the Virgaviridae family that has been detected both in human faecal samples and in different types of water. It has been suggested as a viral indicator of faecal contamination in order to monitor the quality of the water. Here we present a study conducted in Italy by the Italian National Institute of Health with the aim to investigate the occurrence and concentration of PMMoV in different types of water (wastewaters, rivers, ground and marine waters, and drinking water) to spread awareness about its possible use as a viral indicator.
