Law 376 of 14 December 2000 stipulates that doping is a problem that concerns both sports ethics and the protection of the health of those who practice competitive and amateur sports activities. Emerging is the issue of the medicalization of the athlete and the use of supplements containing substances prohibited for doping and harmful to health.

The Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) promotes doping-free sport and carries out research, training and information on doping-related issues. It also conducts surveillance activities on the national anti-doping laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and on anti-doping control procedures in sports events. The Help line Anti-Doping – 800 896970 provides, anonymously and free of charge, advice and information to citizens.
