Center activities

The National transplant center (CNT) is the technical-scientific body responsible for coordinating the National Transplant Network used by the Ministry of Health, the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Established with the Law of April 1, 1999 n. 91 (link to the Italian website) at the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), it operates according to the guidelines and programming provided by the Ministry of Health, in agreement with the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces.

The CNT carries out the functions of addressing, coordinating, regulating, training and supervising the transplant network, as well as operational functions of allocating organs for the national transplant programs and, in particular, the emergency program, the pediatric program, the hyperimmune program, the program split-liver, the cross-over kidney program, organ exchanges with foreign countries, refunds and surpluses. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, it operates in the network of competent authorities set up by the European Commission.

The National transplant center performs its functions in the following macro sectors: organs, tissues, hematopoietic stem cells and reproductive cells. These different areas of competence make the Center, together with the Ministry of Health, the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces, the competent authority for aspects related to donation, procurement, organ transplantation and for activities concerning donation, preservation and transplantation of tissues and cells.

The functions of the CNT are established by national rules and by European directives which, since the 2000s, have contributed to regulating these sectors. Its mission is aimed at strengthening the national transplant network, through the creation of a model of governance and participatory programming between the State, Regions and Autonomous Provinces which places it at the center of a complex organizational system, both in terms of interaction and type and number of facilities and professionals involved.

The CNT contributes, among other things, to making the procurement of organs, tissues and cells in our country more effective and harmonious, as well as consolidating the organizational processes of the national transplant network and promoting the quality and safety of all donation and transplant procedures. Finally, the CNT supports the correct information on the issues of donation and transplantation and the training of operators. The functions of the CNT are presented in this sheet.

Organization of the Center

To carry out its functions and activities, the CNT uses an operational structure articulated in a Directorate general, with staff functions, in a health area and an administrative area.
