Chemical and biological contaminants

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal n.3 "To ensure health and well-being for all at all ages" states that by 2030 reduce by 1/3 premature mortality from non-communicable environmental diseases related to contaminants of natural origin (toxins) or products from human activity (industrial, agricultural, livestock).

The activities of the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) in this sector are concentrated in determining the contaminants to characterize the environmental exposure of the population and that which is inside the body (biomonitoring) during daily activities.

The ISS studies the toxicity mechanisms and evaluates the risks to the health of the exposed population, including the most vulnerable groups, in order to prepare prevention and health protection plans.
