Center activities 

The National center for chemicals, cosmetics and consumer protection (CNSC), in its leading role in the Italian and European context, is the main research, evaluation, control, regulation, training and information structure on chemicals, products and on articles to protect the health of consumers and workers, and to promote innovation and competitiveness. 

It assesses the dangers and risks associated with the use of substances and chemicals, including for marketing; it estimates the exposure, characterizes the risks, identifies what are known as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) to propose the most suitable measures for risk management. 

Address emerging issues related to cosmetics, tattoos and permanent makeup, biocides, materials and objects for personal use, textiles, clothing, leather, toys, products for children, construction and the automotive sector and end of waste (cessation of waste qualification) to protect the health of the population. 

It acts on behalf of the competent authority (Ministry of Health) as the interface of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), of the European Commission and of the European Bodies and International Cooperation - Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD ), European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), World Health Organization (WHO) - on chemicals and related products. 

It is the national reference for prevention and surveillance plans for dangerous exposures and chemical poisoning and for product control. 

It also provides support to stakeholders through the CLP Helpdesk, databases and Archive of dangerous preparations. 

The Center coordinates the network of chemical product control laboratories and is the national reference laboratory for support to the Ministry of Health, the Regions and autonomous Provinces. 

  

Organization of the center 

The Center is divided into departments and operating units staffed by the Management. 

The departments carry out institutional activities in the context of the programmatic objectives entrusted to the Center and represent the functional units responsible for the planning and implementation of the Department's activities (art.17 of the ROF). 

The operational units perform coordination functions in the field of scientific research and third mission.
