Obesity

Overweight and obesity are major public health problems globally and are risk factors for various chronic diseases.

Excess weight is an excessive accumulation of body fat due to an imbalance between the calories consumed and the calories burned, often due to excessive eating and insufficient physical activity. Thus, when obesity is not due to a pathological condition, it can be prevented by adopting healthier lifestyles.

The Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) contributes to the fight against obesity through various population surveillance systems (for example OKkio alla SALUTE, read The Results 2019)   and through training and communication on nutrition and physical activity.
