Neurocognitive and psychic deficits in different stages of life
Exposure to pre and post-natal adverse environments can lead to individual vulnerability to the onset of cognitive disabilities even associated with psychiatric diseases.
These can occur early (from birth to adolescence) or during aging, reducing life expectancy and quality of life.
The Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) studies the early biological determinants of health and disease with particular focuson both genetic and epigenetic risk factors, i.e. associated with the direct effects of the environment on the genome. These studies make use of a multidisciplinary approach of a pre-clinical (animal models), clinical (population cohorts followed over time) and epidemiological approach, and to identify intervention strategies, including healthy lifestyles.
