International HERITY certification to the ISS Museum and Library

ISS, April 21, 2022 - The ISS is the first research institution in the world to have received the HERITY (Heritage and Quality) certification for its Museum and Library (with its Rare Books Fund). The ceremony for the delivery of the certification plates was held today 21 April, an important date since it coincides with the birth of Rome, with the birth of the ISS (1934) and also with the birth of the new Museum (2017). The certification is valid for the three-year period 2021-2023.

"We are proud that the historical heritage of the ISS - says the Director General Andrea Piccioli - is recognized internationally. The Museum and the Library, albeit with a different history, feed and enrich each other and in a synergistic way between research and communication ".

The performances were achieved with excellent scores in all the four sectors evaluated by HERITY for the final assessment: value, conservation, communication and services. "The whole certification process has been a source of great joy for us - says Paola De Castro, director of the Scientific Communication Service and the Knowledge Service, head of the Museum and Library - because the Institute which is well known for current research,  is also valued as a place of history and culture. Indeed it is rich in precious historical documents and objects , which make it possible to know and enhance its  roots and its continuous commitment to overcome the challenges of public health ".

"The Museum belongs to the Scientific Communication Service while the Library to the Knowledge Service and the convergence between the two services - the HERITY report reads - is gradually increasing due to the fact that both are under the Presidency of the ISS, and they are also directed by the same officer.

This also facilitates the exchange of collections (for example scientific instruments are on display at the Library, and books are shown at the Museum).

The Museum

It was inaugurated on 21 April 2017 by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. A multisensory journey with special effects, sounds, images and objects reveals fragments of ISS  history and the passion of those who worked under these walls: from Nobel laureates, to glassblowers, to all those who at various levels have dedicated their lives to science . Located on the floor H of the main building of the ISS, in the "Winter Garden", the Museum immediately fascinates visitors, with its wonderful emerald green floor, in Vietri ceramic, - reproducing symbols of the classical culture, built over the years '50s of the twentieth century and perfectly maintained -  which contrasts with the black of the walls thus screating a very special atmosphere.

The Library

The Library has been supporting the research activity carried out by the institution since 1934, the year the Institute was founded. It is specialized in scientific documentation in the field of biomedicine and public health and is the reference library for biomedical research in Italy. It guarantees access to approximately 20,000 full-text electronic journals and to the main databases of the biomedical sector. The printed documentary heritage consists of over 9,000 periodicals and about 200,000 monographs that include publications by national and international bodies, pharmacopoeias, official acts, health legislation and gray literature. It has a Rare Books Fund, consisting of over a thousand specimens aged between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
