Volume 38, no. 11, November 2025. HIV/AIDS in Italy up to December 31, 2024
Abstract
HIV/AIDS in Italy up to December 31, 2024
In 2024, 2,379 new HIV diagnoses were reported, with an incidence of 4.0 per 100,000 residents, lower compared to that reported in Western European countries and the European Union (5.9 new diagnoses per 100,000). Since 2012, the highest number of new diagnoses is attributable to sexual transmission (MSM, heterosexual males, and heterosexual females). In 2024, heterosexual transmission accounted for 46.0% (27.9% in males, 18.1% in females) of reported diagnoses, sex between men for 41.6%, and injecting drug use for 3.8%. Between 2012 and 2020 a decreasing trend was observed, whereas since 2020 the trend increased and stabilized in 2024. In 2024, 450 AIDS diagnoses were reported, with an incidence of 0.8 per 100,000 residents, 83.6% of these individuals discovered being HIV-infected in the six months prior to AIDS diagnosis.
