Every year on June 14, choosing Landsteiner’s birthday to commemorate it, Austrian doctor discovering the ABO blood group system, World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Blood Donor Day: one of eight global public health campaigns recognized by the OMS.
It is a significant opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood that is not just for the propose of transfusion, it has many other benefits for the global health industry.
The theme of World Blood Donor Day 2022 - Give blood and keep the World beating - highlights the essential contribution that blood donors make to contribute to better global health.
Other objectives of this year’s campaign are:
- thank blood donors
- widen public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation
- promote the community values of blood donation
- encourage youth to embrace the humanitarian call to donate blood
- celebrate the potential of youth as partners in promoting health
The host for World Blood Donor Day 2022 events is Italy. The country will host this event through its National Blood Centre - AVIS in Rome on 14 June (10:30-13:00) Palazzo Santa Chiara - Piazza di Santa Chiara 14.
