Back N°57/2021 COVID-19: conclusions of the monitoring activity of the Situation Room

•   The weekly incidence at national level rapidly and generally increased compared to the previous week, and was just below the threshold of 50 cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants.
•    Transmissibility estimated on the basis of symptomatic cases increased reaching levels close to the epidemic threshold; transmissibility estimated on the basis of hospitalized cases increased reaching levels above the epidemic threshold. This trend needs to be monitored with extreme attention and, if confirmed, could foreshadow a new wave of the epidemic.
•    Bed occupancy in intensive care units and in medical wards associated with COVID-19 are no longer declining.
•    Higher vaccination coverage, completion of the vaccination courses and maintaining a high immune response, through booster doses for the categories indicated by the ministerial provisions, are the main means for preventing further upsurges in the circulation of the virus that is being strengthened by the emerging variants.
•    It is advisable to continue to carry out extensive contact tracing, also through the active collaboration of citizens so as to curb the rise in number of cases; it is further advisable to be very careful and comply with recommended measures and behaviours aimed at curbing further increases in the circulation of the virus.
