Back Press Release No. 49/2021 Nobel Prize awarded to Parisi. Brusaferro: "Congratulations, this award makes Italian research proud!"

ISS, October 5th 2021 -

Silvio Brusaferro, President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità – ISS (Italian National Institute of Health), said: "I wish to extend my congratulations to Giorgio Parisi on receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics, which confirms the undisputed value of Italian research. This award makes the ISS proud. Parisi is the main representative of Rome’s school of theoretical physics, founded by Enrico Fermi who worked in our laboratories. The award encourages the entire Italian scientific community to continue in its efforts to improve the health and well-being of society."

The ISS has had the pleasure and honour to work with Parisi and his group for some time. In particular, since the 1980s, Prof. Parisi has shown a real interest in the research carried out by ISS physicist Paolo Del Giudice, who passed away prematurely in April 2020. Del Giudice's work focused on developing neural networks and electrophysiological analysis. This line of research is still very much alive to date.

During the pandemic, Parisi personally promoted the sharing of epidemiological data between the ISS and the Accademia dei Lincei. Moreover, during the pandemic and thanks to Parisi’s role as President, the Accademia dei Lincei, in partnership with the ISS (and the Imperial College London), planned a series of workshops called "Health and Community" on multidisciplinary topics, from philosophy to the social and anthropological perspectives of biomedicine.
