Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): updates on data gathered from the two Italian sentinel surveillance systems up to the 31st December 2020
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are widely spread worldwide, affecting millions of people every year. In Italy there are two different sentinel surveillance systems: the sentinel surveillance system reporting data on patients with a symptomatic STI, started in 1991, and the sentinel surveillance system, started in 2009, which reports data on people tested for at least one of the following STIs: Chlamydia trachomatis infection, Trichomonas vaginalis infection, gonorrhoea. The National AIDS Unit (Centro Operativo AIDS, COA) of the Italian National Institute of Health coordinates both surveillance systems and receives data through a web-based platform.
