Back April 2021 - World Health Day

On April 7th, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates the World Health Day. This year's theme is: Building a fairer, healthier world.

The WHO emphasizes the consequences of the pandemic that is affecting the planet, highlighting how illness and death from Covid-19 have been higher among groups who face discrimination, poverty, social exclusion and adverse daily living and working conditions.
This part of the population is more exposed to the disease and less likely to have access to quality health services and more likely to experience adverse consequences as a result of the measures implemented to contain the pandemic. Covid has increased global inequalities in healthcare.
The key messages addressed to governments by the WHO are:

  • join the campaign for a fairer, healthier world
  • work together to end health inequalities
  • support health for all: nobody is safe until everyone is safe

The WHO also identifies key directives that should represent the main lines of action for the world governments:

  • investing in basic healthcare
  • give priority to health and social protection
  • investing in cities, for example by improving transport systems and water and sanitation facilities
  • operate incisive action on data processing, to ensure that they are timely and of quality: this is the only way to identify and face the inequalities

The monitoring of health inequality, according to the WHO, should be an integral part of all national health information systems.
