ACTIVITIES

Italian National Reference Laboratory for the treatment of foods and their ingredients with ionizing radiation

Reference legislation

Currently, in Europe, the treatment with ionizing radiation is governed by the directives 1999/2 / EC and 1999/3 / EC , implemented in our country by the Legislative Decree 30 January 2001, n. 94. The legislation covers the general aspects of the production, marketing and import of foods and their ingredients treated with ionizing radiation, also governing technical aspects relating to the treatment conditions, the products that can be irradiated, and the health authorization of the treatment plants. To guarantee the consumer’s free choice, the legislation establishes that all foods and /or ingredients treated with ionizing radiation must have the word "irradiated" on the label and that each Member State must carry out checks on the foods at the market stage to verify the labelling compliance.
This area contains the regulatory documents of the European Union and the relevant Italian legislation regarding the activity of the National Reference Laboratory for the treatment of foods and their ingredients with ionizing radiation.
