Antimicrobial resistance represents one of the main problems in pubblic health, not only for the health impact (mortality and morbidity increase) but also for its ecomical implications (increase of sanitary costs). Recently, all over the world, the effort to control antimicrobial resistance has improved thanks to scientific research aimed to understand the biological basis of this issue and to the creation of surveillance networks, in order to continuously monitor the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this meeting is to provide update information on the epidemiology and the most important determinants of antimicrobial resistance, both in veterinary and human medicine. Furthermore, the meeting presents the available data about the use of antibiotics and their rational use, as well as the policies to prevent and control the spread of antimicrobial resistance. During the meeting, the results of the first year of EARSS (European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System) project, an antimicrobial surveillance program funded by the European Comunity in which Italy is involved, will be presented.
