Symposium. Microbiological and epidemiological aspects of infections caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae and other coryneform bacteria. Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Rome, may 14, 1999. Abstract book.

The Symposium is organized within the European Project Microbiological Surveillance of Diphtheria in Europe
(DG XII, BioMed 2, PL98/3793) with the objective of updating the microbiological and epidemiological features of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and diphtheria, a disease that was no longer considered a major health problem in Europe. The re-emergence of the diphtheria epidemic in the New Independent States (as well as the occurrence in Western countries of some cases imported from epidemic or endemic areas) has highlighted that the downturn in the system of surveillance and prevention through vaccination coverages can lead to the re-emergence of diphtheria. Furthermore, recently the emergence of non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae associated with severe and often recurrent sore throat, endocarditis and other systemic diseases has been reported from Europe and Australia. This emphasized the need for continued microbiological surveillance of C. diphtheriae in Europe and the development of sero-epidemiological studies for diphtheria immunity. The Symposium also focuses on the microbiological characteristics of other coryneform bacteria, whose pathogenetic potential has been recently suggested.
