Increasing attention is devoted to the role of the preconception phase in the primary prevention of birth defects. An adequate intake of folic acid is an important factor to prevent the risk of malformations, mainly neural tube defects. Primary prevention of birth defects brings health and social benefits as well as healthcare cost saving. Therefore, periconceptional supplementation with folic acid, as well as healthy dietary habits, should be promoted in all women of childbearing age. The Italian Network for folic acid promotion, coordinated by the Centro Nazionale Malattie Rare of Istituto Superiore di Sanità operates since 2004 to raise awareness on such issues. The Workshop has debated critical and innovative issues of birth defects primary prevention, through a multidisciplinary viewpoint encompassing diet, teratogenic agents, genetic factors as well as social and cultural aspects.
