Evaluating the effectiveness and the impact of prevention activities is a national priority for planning health promotion and preventive actions. The evaluation of effectiveness and impact of prevention activities has been recognized as a priority also at the European Commission, which has recently funded a Joint Action on Congenital Malformations (CM), coordinated by EUROCAT (European network of congenital anomalies). The purpose of this activity is to strengthen Europe-wide surveillance network of CM, to facilitate the comparison of epidemiological data collected from several registers and to identify the potentials of primary prevention in the field of CM. The National Centre for Rare Diseases - Centro Nazionale Malattie Rare (CNMR) - was recently invited to participate in this EUROCAT (European Network for surveillance of CM) Joint Action as coordinator of the activity of the Work Package (WP) that focusing on the effectiveness of prevention of CM. The WP will apply as operative model the evaluation of the effectiveness of folic acid promotion in the prevention of some birth defects. The final purpose is to establish a consensus on prevention strategy to be included in European countries national plans. Main goal of Joint Conference of the "Italian Network Folic Acid Promotion" and "National Coordination of CM Registers" is to create synergies between the health prevention services and the CM surveillance systems.
