The Italian Network for the Promotion of Folic Acid and Primary Prevention of Congenital Defects was set up in April 2004 and is coordinated by the National Center Rare Diseases of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Its main objective is to promote, coordinate and bring to the attention public actions in favor of a greater intake of folic acid in the periconceptional period, integrated within broader programmes of primary prevention of congenital defects. Research institutes, University departments, Scientific societies, Registries, Regional offices and councils, Patient associations and journalists take part in the Workshop. The main topics of the Workshop are the presentation and discussion of the activities performed within the Network. Up to date results concerning basic biomedical, clinical and social-healthcare research, nutritional status of the population, registration of congenital malformations, transfer of results from research to clinical practice and social-healthcare regulation, training, informing and updating practitioners and citizens, and risk-benefit assessment of prevention interventions are presented.
