Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are a leading cause of virus-associated cancers of anogenital, oropharyngeal and cutaneous epithelium. The most prevalent of these is cervical cancer, the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Screening for cervical cancer is accomplished utilising a Pap smear and pelvic exam. While this technology is widely available and has reduced cervical cancer incidence in industrialized nations, it is not readily available in third world countries where the cervical cancer incidence and mortality remain high. Cervical cancer association with infection with “high risk” HPV types creates a unique opportunity to develop new diagnostic technologies for the detection of the virus and to prevent or treat cervical cancer through anti-viral vaccination strategies. In this workshop the advantages of these new strategies are discussed, as well as how to correlate them to those available and their effects on public health.
