Promoting mental health in adolescents through sport and physical activities
Adolescence entails biological changes, psychological challenges and social pressures that, combined with additional risk factors, make adolescents particularly vulnerable to mental health problems. The COVID-19 pandemic and the relative social distancing measures have had a significant impact on adolescents who were exposed to several risk factors for psychosocial distress and mental health problems. In young people lack of social contacts exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities and worsened the condition of those with mental disorders. Physical activity and sports can have a positive influence on general and mental health and can represent a promising strategy for the prevention of psychological suffering and mental disorders.
Malaria, in Italiano: Italian researchers in the world present their studies to eliminate malaria
Between October 2022 and April 2023 seven meetings of the initiative “Malaria, in Italiano: Italian researchers in the world present their studies to eliminate malaria”, organised by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, ISS (the National Institute of Health in Italy), the University of Camerino and the Italian Malaria Network, have been an opportunity for Italian researchers working abroad to present their research in malariology and their scientific and personal career to students, researchers and interested citizens, as well as to establish or consolidate links and collaborations with the various research entities engaged in the fight against malaria in our country.
Stress, health and gender differences in family caregivers
Family caregivers are the unpaid people who continuously take care of not self-sufficient family members. Our data have been gathered according to an observational study based on collecting self-reported online questionnaires, relative to both mental and physical health. The survey has been undertaken by two groups of family caregivers: the ones looking after relatives affected by dementia/Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and the ones looking after relatives affected by neurodevelopmental disorders/Autism (ASD). Preliminary results of the pilot study, referred to 201 questionnaires collected in the Lazio Region, indicate a higher perception of stress in the caregivers of the AD group compared to the ASD group, with women showing in both groups greater stress and more depressive symptoms than men, with more significant differences in the ASD group.
The quality of perinatal care and COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy: the contribution of the Italian Obstetric Surveillance System (ITOSS) at the Italian Institute of Health
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian Obstetric Surveillance System (ItOSS) at the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) coordinated a national project to collect and analyse data from SARS-CoV-2 cases during pregnancy and post-partum. The collected data also enabled the assessment of the perinatal care. Some findings of the ItOSS project were presented and discussed during the webinar. Furthermore, the process promoted by the ISS that led to developing and disseminating ad interim recommendations on COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy and breastfeeding was illustrated. A sociologist and a medical historian presented valuable insights for the discussion.
