Since 1978 the Documentation Service has been the national Reference Center for MEDLARS (MEDical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), Bethesda, USA. In the framework of the collaboration between the ISS and the NLM, the Italian translation of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) was conceived to join the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) project for the standardization, at an international level, of biomedical and health-related terminology. 2006 MeSH release includes 23,885 main descriptors for indexing, retrieval, organising and management of over 14 millions of citations of articles in MEDLINE/PubMed. The Italian translation of Mesh started in 1998 and was completed by 2004. The translation, available since November 2004 on ISS website, has been yearly updated. The meeting offered an overview of utilization of the Italian translation of MeSH in research, scientific publishing and health promotion.
