In the context of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC, the individualization of biological describers of different trophic levels has a fondamental role. In this report an experimental model of bioindication of water quality, through the vascular plants, is introduced. The study area includes nine rivers of the mediterranian eco-region in Italy. The studies carried out on the benthic invertebrate community and vascular plants gave comparable results and enhanced the existence of two principal gradients: water quality and disturbance. Four groups of species with different degree of sensibility to the pollution were found. In Appendix A we report a summary description for some target species, while in Appendix B a frame of the principal water habitat of the Italian peninsula. This study, concerning plant communities, is a contribution to the application of WFD in Italy.
