Activity of the Centre

The National Transplants Center (Centro Nazionale Trapianti, CNT) is the technical-scientific body responsible for coordinating the National Transplant Network used by the Ministry of Health, the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano. Established by Law no. 91 of 1 April 1999 at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, it operates according to the guidelines and programming provided by the Ministry of Health, in agreement with the Regions and Autonomous Provinces.

The CNT performs functions of guidance, coordination, regulation, training and supervision of the transplant network, as well as operational functions of organ allocation for national transplant programs and, in particular, the emergency program, the pediatric program, the hyperimmune program, the split-liver program, the cross-over program for the kidney, organ exchanges with foreign countries, restitutions and surpluses. It participates, on behalf of the Ministry of Health, in the network of competent authorities in the field established by the European Commission.

The CNT exercises its functions in the following macro sectors: organs, tissues, hematopoietic stem cells and reproductive cells. These different areas of competence make the Centre, together with the Ministry of Health, the Regions and the Autonomous Provinces, the competent authority for aspects related to donation, procurement, organ transplantation and for activities concerning the donation, preservation and transplantation of tissues and cells.

The functions of the CNT are established by national laws and European directives that, since the 2000s, have helped to regulate these sectors. Its mission is aimed at strengthening the National Transplant Network, through the creation of a model of governance and participatory programming among the State, Regions and Autonomous Provinces that places the CNT at the centre of a complex organizational system, both for levels of interaction, and for the type and number of structures and professionalism involved.

Moreover, the CNT contributes to making the management of the procurement of organs, tissues and cells in Italy more effective and harmonious; contributes to the consolidation of the organizational processes of the National Transplant Network and promotes the quality and safety of all donation and transplantation procedures. Finally, the CNT supports the correct information on the issues of donation and transplantation and the training of operators. This fact sheet presents in detail the functions of the CNT.

Organization of the Centre

To carry out its functions and activities, the CNT makes use of an operational structure divided into a General Directorate, to which staff functions belong, in a health area and an administrative area. Consult the organization chart of the Centre, also available in its analytical version.
