Thyroid pathologies represent a heterogeneous group of very frequent conditions that affect all stages of life and have a high socio-health impact.
The activities carried out at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS, the National Institute of Health in Italy) in this area concern the study of congenital and acquired thyroid pathologies, through surveillance, translational research and training, aimed at the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of these pathologies.
The ISS is also entrusted with the coordination of the National Register of Congenital Hypothyroid (Registro Nazionale degli Ipotiroidei Congeniti, RNIC) and the National Observatory for the Monitoring of Iodoprophylaxis in Italy (Osservatorio Nazionale per il Monitoraggio della Iodoprofilassi in Italia, OSNAMI). The direct examination of adult general population groups also provides an assessment of iodine intake.
