A standard protocol for the diagnosis of acute hepatitis E was developed at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (the National Health Institute in Italy). The protocol involves the use of multiple enzyme immunoassays and a complementary molecular test. The methodological procedure has been developed with the aim of providing the facilities to the units of the National Health Service. This protocol for the diagnosis of hepatitis E was validated on 52 sera from patients with non-A-C acute hepatitis, coming from different Italian regions and collected in a period between 2004 and 2010. Present data indicate that the proposed diagnostic strategy is recommended to ensure a correct diagnosis of acute hepatitis E. The results suggest that a national study to assess the exact impact of acute HEV infection in our country should be planned.
