In this review the environmental and health impacts of the polyvinylchloride production and uses are summarized. These impacts are divided according to the different steps of the production (synthesis of vinylchloride, polymerization, compounding, processing, manufacturing of the final products), uses, recycling and disposal. Vinylchloride in the work environment and contaminants as dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans, heavy metals, phtalic acid esters, hydrochloric acid in the external environment appear to be the major issues to consider in the impact evaluation of this important production. Particularly, these xenobiotics are differentially involved in the emissions during the production, in the disposal of polyvinylchloride, in accidents like fires and in some uses of the finished product.
Key words: Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, Polychlorinated dibenzofurans, Polyvinylchloride, Vinylchloride
