Italian diagnostic reference levels for radio-diagnostic and interventional radiology.

The Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom of 5/12/2013, laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation, has been transposing at national level. The Directive identifies in the Diagnostic Reference Level (DRL) a useful tool to support the optimisation of diagnostic procedures. In particular, the Directive extends its application to interventional radiology, a practice rapidly increasing and representing a critical scenario from the point of patient radiation protection. With a view to the coming implementation of the Directive in the Italian legislation, it has been considered relevant to provide, in collaboration with INAIL (the Italian Istituto Nazionale Assicurazione Infortuni sul Lavoro), a set of DRLs for the Italian radiological practice derived from national surveys conducted by professional societies and these national bodies, with an indication on their use. This document serves as a reference in the forthcoming legislative decree.
