The zoonoses are diseases or infections naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans. The World Health Organization estimates every year more than a billion cases of zoonoses worldwide. In Europe, zoonoses are considered infectious diseases priorities, and the data collected by Member States are published in annual reports. In Italy, the zoonoses are included in the official surveillance of the infectious diseases according to the Ministerial Decree 12/15/1990, but the data provided by the Information System of Infectious Diseases are scarce; as a consequence, the health impact of the zoonoses in Italy is highly underestimated and the knowledge of their epidemiological situation limited. In order to provide for the first time an overview on the zoonoses in Italy and to overcome the infectious diseases official notification system, we collected from the archives of hospital discharge records the information on hospitalized cases due to 30 zoonotic diseases in the period 2009-2013.
